PARAMOUNT CITY: Mayor Peggy Lemons’ Weekly Update for January 6, 2021

Para

Paramount City issued the following announcement on Jan. 6

Happy New Year, Paramount! I know you join me in praying it will be a much better one than the last.

As we start 2021 and look back on the ordeals of 2020, we hold deep in our hearts compassion for our neighbors taken ill by the virus and our Paramount families who have lost loved ones. Tragically, since my last Update on December 23, deaths here have risen from 38 to 61. In those two weeks, Paramount has seen an additional 1,797 cases of COVID-19.

Hope is on the horizon with the distribution of the vaccines. But health officials still warn of a continued surge resulting from holiday gatherings and travel. Our hospitals and their medical staffs are at risk of collapsing. Of course, there are still those who are suggesting that this is all overblown hype for reasons I simply cannot comprehend. COVID fatigue is one thing, but facts don’t lie. In LA County, one person now dies every 10 minutes from COVID-19. While some, claim the nation’s death toll is "exaggerated," Dr. Anthony Fauci has pushed back on such false claims. “The numbers are real. We have well over 300,000 deaths. We are averaging two to three thousand deaths per day.”

Even with the vaccine, everyone still needs to do the right thing – wear masks, keep our distance, avoid crowds, and don’t hold gatherings so that 2021 can truly get us back to a safe place.

TIP OF THE WEEK: There will be a free Household Hazardous Waste & E-Waste Recycling Collection Event on Sat., January 9, at the Paramount Swap Meet, 7900 All America City Way from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Safely dispose of items like antifreeze, unused pharmaceuticals, car batteries, used motor oil, paint, pesticides, home-generated sharps waste, e-waste, and more. It's a free and easy way to safely dispose of items that are too toxic to trash.

Residents will also be able to clear out their clutter at the City’s semi-annual free community-wide cleanup event. It’ll be on Saturday, January 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Paramount Park. We will provide more details as we get closer. (You should have received a postcard in the mail about it recently.)
