California State Assembly District 59 recently issued the following announcement.
The inaugural cohort of Assemblyman Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr.’s Youth Leadership Program kick-off 2020 on Saturday, January 18 with a discussion and presentation on financial literacy. The program, which includes high school participants living within the 59th Assembly District, gathered at the Assemblymember’s district office located at 700 Exposition Park Drive in Los Angeles.
“The program introduced these students to a variety of issues and topics helping to raise their perspectives and understanding on how banking, public policy, career access and advancement work,” said Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer.
Participants attend monthly meetings where they garner experiences that nurture and support their leadership potential and prepare them for a future in college and the workforce.
The Assemblymember’s Youth Leadership Program is a nine-month program that engages sophomore, junior and senior high school students providing mentorship and training on matters ranging from resume design, job interview techniques, understanding the legislative process and preparing for college and careers. The program is open to students of all achievement levels and concludes with a trip to the State Capitol.
Those attending the financial literacy discussion met with an expert in banking who taught students how to open and maintain a bank account, create a savings plan with goals and how to avoid overdraft fees.
